Welcome!
We are pleased to invite you to Arizona State University for the 2007 Workshop on the mathematics of global public health: Modeling disease transmission and biological invasions. This workshop promises unique and exciting opportunities at the interface of mathematical modeling, theoretical biology, and public health policy. The conference is co-organized by the ASU Department of Mathematics and Statistics, the Southwest Consortium for Mathematical and Life Sciences (SWC-MLS), the Mathematics of Information Technology and Complex Systems (MITACS), The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC), the Mathematical and Theoretical Biology Institute/Institute for Strengthening Understanding of Mathematics and Science (MTBI/SUMS), the Decision Theater at ASU, and the ASU School of Computing and Informatics.
Participants
Participants are encouraged to attend from applied mathematics, mathematical biology, epidemiology,
and public health related fields. Conference sessions will be designed to connect research and
practice in public health and mathematical modeling in the fields of disease transmission dynamics
and biological invasions.
- Public Health officials: Learn about methods of modeling that are useful in the prediction and control
of disease outbreaks
- Graduate and undergraduate students in mathematics, biology, epidemiology, and public health: Participate
in poster sessions and attend presentations from leading researchers in the field.
- Researchers: participate in interdisciplinary research program to advance the state of the art in mathematical
biology while forging connections with public health experts in the application of theory to practice
Program
Workshop: Detecting, Monitoring, and Modeling H5N1 Avian Influenza
This half-day workshop is ideal for graduate students and public health officials to learn the fundamentals of disease transmission modeling on a real-world application -- avian flu. Luis Bettencourt and Ruy Ribeiro will lead a workshop on the modeling of avian influenza including mathematical methods, data, and health response.
Plenary Sessions
- Biological Invasions
- Pandemics
- Disease Transmission Dynamics
- Public Health Surveillance and Information Systems
- Mathematical Biology
- Health Policy
Graduate and Undergraduate Student poster session
Keynote Address: Simon Levin
Honorary Luncheon
In tribute to Karl Hadeler (70) and Fred Brauer (75) on the occasion of their birthdays.
Decision Theater at ASU
Tour the Decision Theater at ASU. The Decision Theater at ASU is a state-of-the-art visualization facility designed to advance scientific communication and analysis through visual informatics. Participants will have an opportunity to interact with new tools to monitor and model diseases spatially using visual tools.
