I was born in Los Angeles, California and my parents immigrated from Guatemala. I've always liked mathematics, even if my grades never showed it. While at Loyola Marymount University, I was fortunate enough to interact with many passionate professors and got my B.S. in mathematics. I've spent a couple of summers with the MTBI program which helped me decide to go to graduate school. I have a M.S. in mathematics from the University of Iowa and completed some Ph.D. courses. Most of my training is in the area of Representation Theory of finite groups and Ring Theory. My first teaching position was at the University of the Virgin Islands. After a while I realized that although I enjoy learning and doing research in Algebra, the idea of teaching, improving how to teach to understand mathematics, and understanding better the obstacles many students face in learning math fascinated me more. My research interests are centered around students who are like myself (bilingual, from lower socioeconomic status, first generation born in the US) and how language and culture may be used to enhance their learning and understanding of mathematics.
